Since 1980 gradual decline had set in, in the field of education. Till then education was generally considered a way to improve knowledge. After 1980 more private schools which offered English medium education came into existence. The school managements understood the parents’ mindset. Sending a child to private convent school is regarded as prestige. In India to have a boy is prestige. Sending him to private school is prestige , just like having a car is a prestige. The concept of prestige leads to the rapid but undesirable mushroom growth of English medium schools. These schools have no standards. They have no teachers who can speak English fluently but that doesn't matter. The society and parents observed it from different angle. So the schools took care of the facilities rather than education to satisfy the parents. The parents considered score the progress of the child. Therefore the schools offered more marks to the students. Thus the studies were made mechanical. As a result today in Andhra most students cannot read or write. They have good qualifications and big scores. Most of the English medium students cannot speak in English because education is prestige for the parents and business for the schools. The parents look at the buildings, buses and appearance. They are satisfied with the scores. Still the parents and the schools are the same. The students are the scapegoats
